Urban Predators

Tom had always been aware of the otherworldly beings that mingled among humans. But he never expected to encounter one so boldly in broad daylight.

It was a sunny afternoon in Bremen, where the streets thrummed with life. Shoppers bustled past, tourists snapped photos, and the city's vibrant energy pulsed around Tom as he stood before a bustling building. His eyes wandered through the crowd when something caught his attention—a figure hunched against the wall.

At first glance, it appeared to be just another homeless beggar. But there was something about the way this person held themselves that set them apart from the rest. When their gazes met, Tom felt an unmistakable chill run down his spine. He knew instantly that this wasn't a human; this was a Gar—a shapeshifting, hunchbacked creature in human form.

The Gar returned Tom's stare with unsettling intensity. In that moment, it realized it had been discovered and stood up abruptly, walking into the alleyway without another glance back. Tom watched as it vanished from sight.

His mind racing, Tom knew he needed to alert the Pagan community about this sighting. The Gar were known for their shapeshifting abilities and a penchant for violence. Though not skilled in combat himself, Tom understood the importance of warning others who might be better prepared.

He made his way to the elder council, who listened intently as he described the encounter. "It was broad daylight," Tom emphasized. "No one else seemed to notice."

The elders nodded thoughtfully. They considered that the Gar might visit the city but had never seen them during the day. This sighting would help them keep a closer watch.

"We'll need to take action," said Elder Hilda, her voice firm. "We must protect our community and those around us." She turned to Tom. "Did you get a good look at it?"

Tom shook his head. "Not enough to describe the face or any distinguishing marks."

Elder Ulf added, "That's understandable. Their true forms are terrifying. But we need to be prepared for their next appearance."

The elders decided to alert Pagan law enforcement members loyal to them. These officers could keep an eye out and were more likely to believe reports of Gar activity. The elders also provided them with valuable information: bullets would likely be ineffective, but knives might prove useful if they struck a vulnerable spot under the ribcage.

Late one night, two Pagan police officers, Angela and Michael, patrolled a city park. As they approached some bushes, movement caught their attention. A Gar emerged from the shadows—a dark, hunched figure with bony protrusions on its shoulders standing out against the moonlit trees.

Angela drew her knife as Michael readied his gun. "Stay alert," she whispered. "It's going to try to shift."

The Gar lunged at them, its movements quick and unpredictable. Angela managed to strike it under the ribcage with her knife. The creature fell to the ground, motionless, but before they could assess the situation, another Gar appeared from behind.

Michael turned just in time to see the second Gar lunging toward him. He fired a shot that missed, then drew his knife and engaged the new threat. But it was too fast; its claws slashed deep into Michael's flesh, killing him instantly.

Angela, now alone, fought with renewed determination. She struck the second Gar under the ribcage, ending its life as well. As the Gars died, they transformed into gruesome piles of decayed flesh.

With heavy hearts and a sense of urgency, Angela called for help from fellow Pagans. They quickly removed the Gars' remains from the crime scene before police backup arrived.

When backup arrived, Angela explained that a large bear must have escaped the zoo and attacked Michael in the park. To her surprise, the police department accepted this explanation without question, and the city returned to its normal routine.

The Pagan community mourned the loss of one of their own but couldn't help but laugh at the irony: The city was now on alert due to a vicious bear roaming the park.

However, the elders remained vigilant, knowing that the Gars' presence in the city posed a greater threat than any wild animal. They continued to monitor the situation closely, preparing for any future encounters and ensuring the safety of their community.

Tom, though not a combatant, felt a sense of pride and purpose. He had played a crucial role in alerting the community to the danger and had contributed to the safety of those around him. His encounter with the Gar had not only deepened his awareness but also reinforced his commitment to protecting his community.

As he looked out at the bustling streets of Bremen, Tom knew that the battle against the supernatural was far from over. But with the support of his community and the knowledge that he was part of something greater, he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
